Industralist Naushad Merali dies aged 70

Naushad Merali founder of Sameer Group has died in Nairobi aged 70, his family has confirmed.

The business mogul is set to be buried later in the day according to a statement sent to newsrooms by the Shia Ithna Ashri Jamaat secretariat.

“It is with profound grief and sorrow that we inform you of the sad demise of Dr. Naushad Noorali Merali in Nairobi. He was a businessman the owner of Sameer group. Burial will be held today 3rd July, 2021,” read the statement.

“It is the family’s request that Covid protocols be adhered to firmly hence, only immediate members of the family and those assisting with the burial proceedings to attend. The family thanks you for honouring this request. Details of a Memorial for the wider Community and friends will be circulated in due course.”


The secretariat said only close family members will be allowed to attend the burial due to Covid-19 protocols.


In 2015, Forbes Africa ranked Merali who was the founder of mobile service provider KENCELL now Airtel the 48th richest man in Africa.
