Speaker Muturi resurfaces, confirms participation in traditional ritual

After fellow parliamentarians raised concerns of his whereabouts as he missed a special session, National Assembly speaker Justin Muturi resurfaced Thursday and confirmed participating in the cultural ritual that had placed him in seclusion for eight days.

Muturi was speaking to the media from his home,  adding that he is ready to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta as Mt Kenya spokesman after the president retires in 2022.

Muturi stated, "It has been a great moment for self-reflection and also to consider the issues that affects our region."

The speaker had been undergoing a cleansing process whereby he was only allowed to see a few elders who were conducting the cleansing ceremony.

"There will be all forms of opinions but the idea is to be able to reach out to everybody through persuasion, consultation and discussion," added Muturi.

According to Mt Kenya elders, the process,  will determine whether the speaker is ready to take up the mantle or not by Friday.

Professor Peter Kagwanja, one of the elders, stated, "We are still watching...In order to get a leader who is going to withstand the challenges in the future, you need to get someone who can withstand 10 days or more of ritual purity."

On Saturday, the speaker will be coronated as the Mt Kenya spokesman at the Mukurwe wa Nyagathanga shrine if he passes the test.

In March, Muturi was enthroned as the Mt Kenya East spokesman and he will speak for the Meru, Embu and Mbeere communities.

The Meru's Njuri Ncheke elders coronated him in their shrine in Nchiru, Meru County.
