LSK raises concern over rising murder, insecurity cases

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has raised concerns over growing cases of insecurity, unexplained disappearances, and brutal murders in the country.

In a statement to the media on Saturday, the entity condemned the recent murder of Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) video editor Betty Barasa.

The statement read, “It is reported the gruesome murder of Ms. Betty Barasa took place at 8.30pm at her home in Oloolua Ngong area in Kajiado North in the presence of her family members including children.”

According to the LSK, no suspects have been apprehended for assassination of National Lands Commission Communication Director Jeniffer Wambua on March 27 as investigations are still pending.

LSK has petitioned Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai to expedite the investigation into the murder cases while demanding investigations into the daylight abduction of Benson Njau, an Advocate of the High Court, on February 7.

The LSK also questioned the government regarding the efficiency of security measures it has established in the context of rising crime.

The society added, “These are just one of the many of such heinous acts of gangs of criminals that is leading to the loss of lives of innocent Kenyans and puts to question the efficiency of the security measures in place by the government.”

It has called on the government to ensure security measures are improved in the course of the pandemic and to take action immediately as crime rates are likely to increase during this period, adding that the financial hardships facing Kenyans should be addressed by the government.

“These are just one of the many of such heinous acts of gangs of criminals that is leading to the loss of lives of innocent Kenyans and puts to question the efficiency of the security measures in place by the government,” the LSK stated.

“We urge the government to return the tax reliefs put in place in 2020 to cushion citizens, businesses and investments from the effects of the ongoing lock down as a result of the pandemic,” it added.
