JSC picks Martha Koome for appointment as Chief Justice

The Judicial Service Commission has unanimously nominated Court of Appeal Judge Lady Justice Martha Koome for appointment as the Chief Justice of the Republic of Kenya.


JSC has since forwarded Koome's name to President Uhuru Kenyatta for formal appointment.


Lady Justice Koome was among 10 candidates interviewed for the position to succeed retired Chief Justice David Maraga.

She is set to become the first female Chief Justice.


Koome who joined the judiciary in 2003 and has over 33 years of experience in the legal profession is currently based in Nairobi.


The other candidates who interviewed for the position include Justice Said Chitembwe, Prof Patricia Mbote, Senior Council Philip Murgor, Senior Council Fred Ngatia, Justice Marete Njagi, Justice Nduma Nderi, Justice William Ouko, Prof Moni Wekesa and Alice Yano.
