Uhuru orders closure of bars, bans alcohol sale in restaurants in 5 counties

President Uhuru Kenyatta has ordered the closure of bars in five counties as from Friday midnight as part of the new measures for combating the increasing COVID-19 cases.

The president was addressing the nation on Thursday at State House in Nairobi.

Nairobi, Machakos, Kajiado, Kiambu, and Nakuru were the five counties he listed for the banning of  alcohol sale in restaurants and closure of bars.

70 per cent of Kenya’s COVID-19 infections cases were recorded in these counties, therefore justifying the new stringent measures.

The Head of State added that all restaurants and eateries in the five counties shall only provide take away services until further notice.

He said, “The operations of bars, restaurants and eateries in the other 42 counties shall continue as is, but they shall at all times be conducted in strict fidelity to Ministry of Health guidelines, failure to which appropriate action against management, staff, patrons and premises shall be taken.”
