Interior CS Matiang’i bans 'disco matanga'

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has banned the burial ceremonies infamously known as ‘disco matangas, ’ claiming that they are leading to teenage pregnancies.

The County police commander was directed by Matiang'i to confiscate music systems in such ceremonies, arrest the people present and present them in court.

The CS said, “We have agreed with the county security team that this thing is banned. There will be no disco matanga in Trans Nzoia from now and forever.”

According to Matiang'i, the disco matanga culture has affected the education of underage students in the country.

He stated that it is “leading in the number of teenage pregnancies in the country."

The CS implied that he will stump out the culture in Trans Nzoia the same way he did in Kilifi in the past.

“How we did it that side is how we will do it here,” he said.

Matiang'i added that chiefs who allow such ceremonies to take place will be lose their jobs indefinitely.

According to him, those who impregnate underage girls should be prosecuted. He vowed not to leave the country before he gets answers from the security team in the area.

“Some of these girls were impregnated by adults. Before I leave Trans Nzoia today I want the county commissioner and the county police commander to tell me how many people they have arrested,” said Matiang'i.

The CS was speaking during his Trans Nzoia tour
while accompanied by Devolution and ASALs CS Eugene Wamalwa to assess government projects in the region.

He also talked about how the government is injecting Sh20 billion for development projects in the region before the end of the financial year.

The projects include the building of roads, water projects and an airstrip that will offer direct flights to the county.

The CS also promised the locals that the government will address the title deed problems that have resulted in land-related conflicts in the region.
