Drought crisis instigate conflict in Mandera

The drought crisis in Mandera County has pushed monkeys to attack humans as they are also in search of food and water.

The drought which has lasted about a year  is now causing fierce competition for survival between the residents and wild animals.

More than 200,000 people live in the county  which is on the brink of a humanitarian crisis.

Causing panic among residents, monkeys and baboons living at the top of the hilly mountains of Takaba have now moved to the nearby villages in search of water and food.

Amran Hussein, a resident lamented, “Nyani wanatusumbua saa ile kuna ukame hapa…wanatunyang’anya chakula…saa zingine wanakuja jioni, saa zingine saa saba.”

Mandera Water CEC Mohammed Ali said that the monkeys and baboons are suffering because of lack of food such that they attack and harm women and children.

Crops in the area have withered due to the lack of rainfall and dry water pans.

The residents are calling on the national and county governments to drill additional boreholes and construct other water pans to cater for both residents and animals.
