Companies question government's pick for JKIA terminal maintenance

Firms that were contesting for the maintenance of two JKIA terminals tenders have questioned the decision by the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) to pick a Chinese company for the job.

The contestants have objected the tendering process, accusing KAA of flouting the rules.

According to reports, the government selected China Jiangxi International Economic and Technical Cooperation, a Chinese firm, to execute the renovations of the two terminals valued at Ksh963 million.

One of the firms stated, “Looking at the tender register, China Jiangxi International Economic and Technical Cooperation did not submit a bid. However, another entity China Jiangxi International Economic is indicated to have submitted."

The firms claimed that the name of the company awarded the tender is different from the one that entered into the bidding process.

However, KAA maintained that the Chinese firm won the tender on merit.

KAA acting Managing Director Alex Gitari said, “We awarded the tender to this Chinese firm after successfully bidding for it,”

The Chinese company has started the refurbishment process which includes demolitions to pave way for the construction of new structures.

The authority issued a notice in January announcing the closure of Terminal 1B and Terminal 1C and relocated all airlines that were using them.

"All flight operations previously in T1B and T1C have now been migrated to Terminal 1A and Terminal 2," the notice read.

The two terminals were shut down in January 2021 to pave way for refurbishment and a tender notice was floated, attracting the attention of more than 15 companies.
