Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who was appointed as the new director-general of the World Trade Organization (WTO) on Monday, has been congratulated by China.
In a statement, the Ministry of Commerce said, “China has full confidence in Okonjo-Iweala’s appointment as the WTO director-general.”
Okonjo-Iweala is the first woman and the first African to head the WTO.
The statement also acknowledged her for being engaged in poverty reduction in developing countries and work related to vaccine and healthcare, and having rich experiences in managing international organizations.
Therefore, the statement highlighted that her appointment meets the expectation of all.
China is fully confident in Okonjo-Iweala serving as the director-general, despite COVID-19 and challenges to multilateral trade system.
The country also hopes that under her leadership, the WTO will resume its normal functions as soon as possible and play a significant role in anti-pandemic cooperation and economic recovery.
The statement also showed that China also anticipates that Okonjo-Iweala will be instrumental in helping the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference achieve positive results, advance necessary reforms to the WTO, and uphold and strengthen the authority and effectiveness of the multilateral trade system.
Furthermore, China is dedicated to firmly supporting the multilateral trade system, taking an active part in the WTO reforms and supporting the work of the director-general.
The country intends to play a part in helping the WTO make greater contributions to improving global governance and the well-being of people globally.
