The Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) plans to allow taxis and boda bodas to operate within the CBD in Nairobi as it will ban matatus from the area to ease congestion.
The agency announced that it is working on the expansion of the Green Park matatu terminus at Railways Club to accommodate the preferred means of transport within the CBD.
The expansion is for creating space for the boda boda riders and taxi drivers who will
ferry commuters between the terminus and the CBD.
NMS has dismissed its earlier plan that was meant to accommodate approximately 140 matatus only.
According to the agency, the plan is the best option since many passengers do not want to walk across the city to and from the terminus.
The plan is meant to accommodate all transport stakeholders, NMS added.
NMS Director of Transport, Michael Ochieng said,
"Decongestion is more of being open-minded and we do not want the process to be branded as a matatu issue. We want to bring in taxis and boda boda operators within CBD."
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko banned the operators from CBD, claiming that the riders were unruly and the motorbikes interfered with the smooth flow of traffic.
On December 8, 2020, NMS stated that it will avail buses that will ferry commuters within CBD.
According to the agency, the matatu ban from the CBD will be in effect from the end of January 2021.
