IG Mutyambai assures Kenyans of security at the Kenya-Somali border

The Inspector-General of Police Hillary Mutyambai has assured Kenyans that the  Kenya-Somali border is safe and there is no cause for alarm.

Reports that the al Shabaab militia is terrorising the residents at the Border created tension in the area.

However, Mutyambai took to Twitter to dismiss the fears through his conversation with Kenyans.

The IG admitted that there is unrest on the other side of the border, and security agents are using alternative security communication channels to restore peace.

“It is true that there is unrest on the other side of border and security agents are using alternative security communication channels hence there is no cause for alarm. The Kenyan border is safe and secure,” Mutyambai stated.

In an intensified crackdown on al Shabaab militants in Mandera over the weekend, the special forces team killed one gunman and captured another in ambush.

Reportedly, the militants have been roaming over the expansive area in the past months, destroying infrastructure, particularly government installations.

Monday reports stated that there was heavy gunfire in neighbouring Somalia as troops engaged with those from Somaliland.

According to a statement issued on Monday,  Somalia claimed that Somali and foreign entities had attempted to import high calibre weapons and ammunition into its soil without its knowledge.

The statement read, “The Federal Government of Somalia takes violations of territorial sovereignty and integrity as any action that can have potential in destabilising effects very seriously.”

The Somalia government confirmed that it had launched investigations to determine the origin and motives of the weapons and ammunition.
