Boda boda association react to IG's letter linking them to lawlessness

Boda Boda riders have reacted to a letter from Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai who put them on notice in response to the recent violent incidents linked to them.

The riders expressed their sentiments through the Boda boda Association of Kenya, condeming the notice as they asked to be engaged in a constructive dialogue instead.

Reports have indicated various instances of violence, mugging, robbing and burning of vehicles in towns including Nairobi as linked to boda boda riders who are said to be the main perpetrators.

According to the reports, accident sites are the main places where such crimes occur.

Acts of impunity on the roads and flouting of traffic rules as well as other crimes have also been pegged on the riders.

on Thatsday, IG Mutyambai  asserted that police would soon commence massive operations to restore order and weed out criminals, mapping out the accident hotspots linked to unruliness of boda boda riders.

However, the riders argued that a confrontational approach condemning them would be futile. Therefore, there should be a constructive dialogue.

The association officials  rejected all the claims against their members, asserting that none of them had engaged in impunity, flouting of traffic rules, and other aspects of crime.

They called on the IG to convene a meeting with the association leaders and representatives of the riders to engage both parties in the development of regulations that should govern the sector.
