An outage of multiple Google services including Gmail, maps, Google Docs, and YouTube was reported by a majority of Kenyans on Monday December 14.
Users from the UK, India and other parts of the world also reported the problem. The cause of the outage remains unclear.
The outage occured around 3pm. However, some of the Google services were restored shortly after.
Given that millions of Kenyans now rely on Google for critical services such as work communication through Gmail, getting directions using Google Maps and getting news and entertainment from YouTube, the outage was quite an inconvenience.
YouTube made a statement on Twitter acknowledging the service outage.
The statement read in part, "We are aware that many of you are having issues accessing YouTube right now – our team is aware and looking into it. We'll update you here as soon as we have more news."
Down Detector, a website that shows a live map of outages, also confirmed the global impact of the outage.
Since some companies rely on google docs while teachers depended on the services to teach, many businesses and operations were negatively affected within the short period.
A user identified as Anthony Muraya commented,
"Google Gmail YouTube AdWords down! across Europe, US, Canada, India, SA, Kenya, countries in Central and South America, Australia & likely more.2020 clearly ain’t done with us yet."
Another user questioned, "Africa Kenya, all Google properties not working, what could be wrong?"
