The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has warned Kenyan online shoppers of online fraud as they can fall prey to scammers during their Christmas shopping.
The investigative agency warned Kenyans on Thursday, December 17, revealing that the December Holidays are characterized by a surge in online shopping scams.
DCI stated, "Many shoppers have fallen victim to the scammers. We, therefore, advise the public to take precaution while engaging in online business dealings, to avoid falling prey to online scammers and fraudsters."
The agency urged online shoppers to purchase items only from trusted vendors and be on the look out for fraudsters who mirror websites of established vendors.
Home deliveries should also be allowed with caution such that Kenyans be fully aware of the individuals and riders they allow into their houses.
DCI also urged online shoppers to refuse deliveries from agents who show up to doorsteps without request.
The agency advised Kenyans to dial the DCI toll-free number 0800 722 203 for assistance in case they encounter a security threat.
The festive season is characterized by a lot of shopping, particularly online shopping as the tradition is about giving and gifting.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) has also warned that cybercrime has risen significantly in the East African nation.
