CAS Mwangangi :Healthcare workers will be the first to get Covid-19 vaccine

Health CAS Mercy Mwangangi revealed that when the Covid-19 vaccine arrives in the country in February, the top priority will be given to health care workers, teachers, military and police officers.

During an interview on a local radio station on Tuesday, the CAS said the government had already planned the distribution criterion of 24 million vaccine doses among those who are at the highest risk of contracting Coronavirus.

Mwangangi said, “We have already done the math and know how many will go to the healthcare workers and then we will move to critical workers, police officers, teachers and the military.”

Reportedly, in an operation that is set to cost the tax payer a total of about 10 billion shillings, the government put in its request two weeks ago to the Gavi global vaccine alliance.

According to Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe, the government is looking into ways of partnering with Chinese organisations that have already developed Covid-19 vaccines.

About 20 per cent of the Kenyan population will be beneficiaries of the initial vaccines ordered.
