COVID-19: More than 1000 people arrested for defying containment measures

Special squads arrested more than 1000 revellers this weekend in various clubs over their behaviour of defying the Covid-19 pandemic measures.

According to the police, the arrested revellers are scheduled to appear in courts on Monday.

The squads carried out the operations in various towns including Nairobi, Nakuru, Eldoret and Mombasa.

The licenses of several bars were revoked after the operations and the affected bars and restaurants notified regarding the closure.

Revellers in a bar in Nakuru hurled beers and other objects at the police who entered the bar during the operations as they tried to resist arrest, forcing the officers to throw a tear gas canister in the bar.

The confusion enabled some revellers to escape but at least 86 of them were arrested.

The operations were carried as per the directive of President Uhuru Kenyatta to enable the reinforcement of Covid-19 pandemic control rules.

Police commanders and county inspectorates are collaborating to determine bars that are suspected to be the main source of the spread of the virus.

So far, over 1000 Covid-19 fatalities in the country have been reported.

The night curfew imposed by the president is part of the efforts towards curbing the spread of the virus.
