Kenya to join the world in marking World Standards Day

On Wednesday, Kenya will join the world in commemorating World Standards Day, which is celebrated annually and globally on October 14th.

On October 14, 1946, delegates from 25 countries convened in London to established an international organization with main goal of facilitating standardization.

Therefore, on Wednesday the world will pay a tribute to the expertise and collaborative efforts of the delegates and other experts in developing International Standards through voluntary technical agreements.

The theme for this year's commemoration is ‘Protecting the planet with standards.'

According to KEBS Managing Director, Bernard Njiraini, environmental conservation is enhanced by urgent global actions which are enhanced by standards. Consequently, the impact of rapid human consumption and production to the environment reduces significantly.

Mr. Njiraini said, “This year’s theme recognizes the power of standards to protect the planet. At Kebs, we have standards that address environmental issues such as air, water, soil quality, greenhouse gas emissions, energy efficiency, and much more. We can rely on standards to provide a data-driven approach to protect the environment as well as promote sustainable development."

The International Standards Organization (ISO) has 342 standards which address environmental management, climate change, and sustainable forestry. Njiraini confirmed that plans to adopt these standards are in progress.

"We are consulting and engaging with various local, regional and international stakeholders to develop and implement mainstream frameworks and policies, which support heightened action against climate change,” the KEBS boss added.

Betty Maina, the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Industrialization, Trade, and Enterprise Development, will be the chief guest of the event on Wednesday.

Other reputable government officials who will be in attendance include the ISO President, Eddy Njoroge, and Principal Secretary State Department for Industrialization, Dr. Francis Owino. High-profile international officials will also be in attendance.

Mr. Owino is passionate advocate for environmental conservation through an intergovernmental and international approach.
