Italy to close cinemas, gyms and pools over spike in Covid-19 infections

From Monday October 25, Italy will close cinemas, gyms and swimming pools as a measure to curb the rapid increase in Covid-19 infections.

Shops and other businesses will continue with their operations but hospitality businesses such as restaurants and bars will follow orders of closing by 18:00.

The country's Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte and regional leaders agreed to the execution of the recent measures.

Conte admitted that he is avoiding a repeat of  the national lockdown imposed during the first wave in March and April because it had adverse economic consequences.

However, the Campania region calls for tighter restrictions.

The new measures requires the bulk of secondary school teaching to be conducted online as opposed to classroom teaching and learning.

According to the Spanish media report, there is likely to be a countrywide curfew in Spain as  on Sunday the country's cabinet agreed to a nationwide "state of alarm."

Italy and Spain experienced the most alarming rates of Covid-19 infections and deaths in the pandemic's first wave in Europe.
