former Kenyan ambassador to the WTO, Amina Mohamed, has been endorsed by the East African Community (EAC) for World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director-General post.
CS Mohamed seeks to replace Brazil’s Roberto Azevedo who is bound to step down. The entity endorsed the Sports CS through exchange of letters.
The letter by the Minister and Chairperson of the EAC Council of Ministers, Vincent Biruta,
read in part, "I would like to inform you that Ambassador Amina C. Mohamed is endorsed as the candidate of the East African Community to the post of Director General of the World Trade Organisation."
The Minister and Chairperson of the EAC Council of Ministers, Vincent Biruta, signed the endorsement statement.
Mr. Azevedo's successor's job description includes steering negotiations and reforms in light of increased protectionism.
The COVID-19 pandemic and rising tensions in trade, particularly between China and the United States, instigated the deep recession.
As the first woman to chair the WTO’s General Council in 2005, Amina Mohamed, was nominated officially as the sixth candidate for the post alongside other candidates from Nigeria, Egypt, Mexico, and South Korea.
Eliud Kipchoge, World Marathon record holder, Eliud Kipchoge also endorsed Amina for the post last week.
Mr. Kipchoge said, “I see in her the rare trait of exceptional endurance only exhibited by people with outstanding mental and physical stamina. The kind of people who break records in the most unlikely situations."
Kipchoge referred to Amina as a champion by saying it takes a champion to recognize another. He added that the CS is the suitable person for the post because of her expertise in international trade.
The East Africa Business Council praised Amina for her strategic leadership, passion for international trade, and exemplary negotiation skills.
