Senators query the police uniform policy

Lawmakers have questioned the directive by the National police service(NPS) ordering police officers to secure the new uniform on their own. They warned those in NPS authority that the command is unlawful and a threat to national security.

Further, the lawmakers said opening up the procurement to ordinary tailors is dangerous as it provides Security challenges.

The matter was brought to the attention of the House by Nandi Senator Samson Cheregai who sought a statement from the Ministry of Interior on the directive. Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula and his Wajir counterpart  Mr Ibrahim Ali Seconded the motion.

They later tried to find out whether National police Uniform policy guidelines do exist in the police service, where it's content explained that the Ministry of Interior should produce a circular requiring officers to purchase their own uniforms from a recommended tailor.

Nairobi Regional Commander Rashid Yakub last week warned of disciplinary action against officers who will report to work in the old attire, instead he asked them to put on the medium blue uniform.

He said "All officers are cautioned against mixing uniforms, or wearing non-uniform items alongside the uniform. Failure to comply with these instructions will attract serious disciplinary action."

The lawmakers  requested the NPS to provide the House of the Senate with a list of companies given the tender to supply the new Uniform.
