Zambia opposition leader, Chishimba Kambwili, was jailed on Wednesday following forgery charges applied by the Lusaka Magistrate's Court.
The court found the National Democratic Congress (NDC) leader guilty of forgery and uttering of false documents.
In his judgment, Magistrate David Simu Samba said, "In the first count, the convict was sentenced to 12 months and another 12 months for uttering false documents."
The court however acquitted him on the charge of giving false information to a public officer.
Mr. Chishimba served in the current government as Information Minister but he was fired. He began criticizing the incumbent Lungu regime through the opposition party.
Although his supporters believe that his forgery charges and conviction are politically motivated because of his fall-out with the current government, the matter still taints his image in his bid for Presidency.
According to NDC members, the government is undermining by targeting those critical of the regime. They further claim that the incumbent is frustrating them because it wants a third term.
