Kenya receives 2.2 m AstraZeneca doses from Germany

Kenya has received an additional 2.2 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine from Germany through  the COVAX facility.

This latest donation now brings the total number of Covid-19 vaccine doses received by Kenya to about 16 million.

The the consignment arrived aboard  Martinair cargo flight early Thursday, just a day after Kenya received another 1,462,400 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine from the European Union to help with it's  vaccination efforts.

The vaccines comes amid calls from the government for mass vaccinations in the country, over growing global concerns about the Omicron variant. 

While speaking during the State of the Nation Address on Tuesday, President Uhuru Kenyatta, urged Kenyans to get their vaccines, saying they are the best weapon against the disease that has so far  Claimed 5.24 million lives worldwide and badly hit the economies.

“I urge all Kenyans to get vaccinated, 25 days to Christmas. I urge all to get the jab Let us be on the side of caution, protect our lives and those of all Kenyans.” 

“This new variant remains unknown, so, it is better to err on the side of caution, by receiving our vaccinations we will have played our part in securing not only, our lives but also in protection the lives of those around us,” President Kenyatta said. 

Kenya targets to vaccinate over 10 million adults by end of December, and 27 million by end of 2022. 

So far, Kenya has administered 7.1 million coronavirus vaccines, out of these, 4,415,756 Kenyans have partially been  vaccinated while those fully vaccinated were  2,759,827.

Nairobi city county leads with 27.6% of those fully vaccinated while Mandera trails with less than 2% .
